Welcome to the much-anticipated festive season, and what a blast it’s going to be! What makes me smile during this special time are all the friends and family that travel from all over the country to share special South African holiday moments.
Now that it’s that time of year, how often have you caught yourself thinking of the holiday season as a time for sleds, snowmen, mince pies, turkeys and cocoa? I think we all have at some point, but the awesome truth is that a South African festive season is like no other in the world. Here the sun blazes, we laugh, we eat great food, we travel close and far to our families, and we do things our way. Let me share some reasons why I LOVE the South African summer season.
Turkey isn’t the only way
Some of us will enjoy a delicious traditional turkey along with the rest of the world but, here in SA, it’s only one meal among many that we enjoy around this time. We will have fresh salads, snoek on the braai, pap with spicy chakalaka, gammon, pie, chops and much more. Yum!
Here’s a great way to make your turkey uniquely South African:

It’s hot!
For us, a white Christmas is far off in a distant land but here it will be hotter than ever. That means beach fashion, melted ice creams, fresh tans and cool-drinks. I get thirsty just thinking about it…

We have outdoor fun
We are not a nation that gets stuck indoors! With the weather and the vibe at an all-time-high, we will be taking every opportunity to get out there and have a good time. Many will drive to the coast to soak up the sun, while others will do crazy cool things like hiking, boating, fishing or just chilling and watching the game (go Boks!).
We embrace culture
What makes our country great are the different cultures and all the different ways we celebrate. And although we might all do things our own way, we are all bound by our love for family and gratitude for the good things this year has brought.
Thanks for always being awesome and I look forward to a ridiculously cool 2015.
Many Happy Wishes,
Beame
