Johannesburg to KwaZulu-Natal – Heidelberg

Heading south, the onboard e-tolls tag beeping to the beat of our killer playlist, we agreed – the less highway, the better. Ergo, direction Heidelberg!

Now this place has some old-school swag! There is a distinct Voortrekker feel to it. After all, the town acted as the capital of the Boer Republic during the war. The Victorian era theme stands strong, from the old, well-preserved architecture, to Her Majesty’s Tea Parlor – a bewildering gem with treats to refresh any traveller.

Everything about this place is distinguished; the rose bush and colourful décor, the china and silverware, the selection of artisan teas, and the Bar-One and mascarpone cheesecake with a buttery, ginger biscuit base – boom! While you chew on that, here’s a fun fact: Heidelberg flanks the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, a large territory containing Gauteng’s highest point, just about 2,000 metres above sea level.
